Abstract The purpose of this research is to explore the formation of the concept of New Weekly magazine and its visual rhetorical presentation on the cover of its inaugural issue. New Weekly magazine was launched in Guangzhou in 1996, and since then it has continued to explore the visual rhetoric of its cover images, introducing different styles of magazine covers. From the perspective of visual rhetoric theory, the author analyzed New Weekly as a rhetorician through qualitative analysis, the formation of its “cutting edge” concept, and its influence on the planning and design of the first issue. The study found that Mian Sun’s experience in newspaper editing and magazine operations accumulated before the founding of New Weekly has affected New Weekly’s editorial philosophy, awareness of political risks, the definition of readers, and the establishment of the concept of visual expression. This determines what New Weekly is and what visual image it will appear in the public eye. These ideas are finally presented on the cover of the inaugural issue in a visual form, which is not only related to the market environment and political hotspots at the time but also related to the conscious brand awareness of New Weekly.
