Abstract Abstract This article aims to investigate the acculturation in the colonial architecture in Champasak province, Lao PDR. Qualitative research method was adopted in this study. The results show that the French colonial style strongly influenced the architecture created during 1893-1954 in Champasak, causing the architecture to resemble a western style. However, due to its geographical factor, the architecture had been slightly modified to suit the climate. France began to construct several buildings to serve as administrative buildings, houses for French administrators and families as well as Lao elites. The French designed and oversaw the construction of all buildings. For public works, Vietnamese labors were imported as they were renowned for great construction skills. Today, Champasak is changing dramatically in terms of society, economics, politics, lifestyles as well as its architecture, making it the economic hub in the southern region. The province is home to people of different races who come to live and do businesses. Also, the colonial buildings have been used until today with some minor changes to suit the condition of the building, the owners, and the influential people in the society. These factors have apparently contributed to acculturation in the colonial architecture, whether it is from its geography, the influences of construction techniques on the building functions and the effort to develop Pakse, the city in Champasak, to become the city of trades and economics. Another factor is Wat Pho, designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is in the province. According to the UNESCO guidelines, any form of building considered a part of cultural heritage reflecting the history in the area shall be preserved. As a result, there are restrictions to modify or renovate the preserved buildings. All factors mentioned above clearly reflect the acculturation phenomenon found in the colonial architecture in Champasak, Lao PDR.
