Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) is a bioplastic, which can be used as feedstock for biofuel production. The liquid biofuel derived from PHA, is in form of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) or biodiesel, named as hydroxyalkanoate methyl ester (HAME). In this work, PHA was converted into HAME via acid-catalysed esterification reaction. The esterification reaction was optimized by variations of reaction time (10-60h), concentration of acid catalyst (5-15%v/v), solvent concentration (50-150 mL) and type of acidic catalysts (H2SO4, HCl and CH3COOH). The results showed that optimal condition for HAME production was 150 mL methanol concentration, 15% v/v catalyst loading, 67˚C reaction temperature, 40 h reaction time and HCl was the most effective catalyst for biodiesel production. The highest yield of HAME (95.05%) was obtained under optimal conditions. The Characterization of HAME was conducted according to the ASTM standard. The fuel properties of HAME including specific gravity (D1289), Density at 20 ℃ (D1289) and molecular mass were 1.01, 1.01 g/cm3 and 3.5-4.3×105 g/mol respectively. Almost fuel properties met the ASTM standard.
