Abstract This article aimed to 1) study the current state of Isan Dvaravati Semas, 2) analyze the cultural adaptation of the Semas, and 3) analyze the creation of new meanings of the Semas. This study employed a qualitative research method relying on documentary data and field data presented by means of descriptive analysis. The results are as follows. 1) Regarding the current state, the Semas found in Isan areas were made during 1200-1600 B.E. Most of them were found at the basin of the Chee River, Moon River, and Mekong River. They are still found until the present time. These Semas appear in three shapes, including the natural stone shape, the ingot shape, and the thick-sheet shape. The carving of Buddha’s stories and Jatakas in Buddhism can also be found on them. 2) For the cultural adaptation of these Semas, there are three features as follows. (1) In terms of space, some Semas are situated at the original locations, while some are moved into the temple areas, sacred areas, and museums. (2) Regarding the usage of the Semas, they are placed around Buddhist churches, while some are brought into the cities’ shrines, or used as unique objects at cultural tourist attractions. (3) There is cultural assimilation regarding the Semas, in which Buddhism, Brahma, and Animism are combined together. 3) Regarding the creation of new meanings of the Semas, it was found that such creation is based on folklores which define the Semas as the communities’ sacred objects. There was the creation of myths which were developed to be festivals and traditions with sound and light performances which reflect the communities’ values. The Semas were also given the meaning as symbolic representatives of each community which was developed to be a tourist attraction. In addition, they are also academically used in history and archeology.
