Abstract |
Abstract: Inle Lake is the second largest inland lake in Myanmar. The major factors affecting the quality of the Inle Lake water are agricultural activities, and domestic and industrial wastes. This study investigates the pollution sources to the Inle Lake water quality. In Inle Lake, poor agricultural management by some farmers has resulted in leaching of nutrients and chemicals contaminating the water in the Lake. The extensive usage of chemical fertilizers for increasing the agricultural products and pesticides for the protection of crops from pests are main sources of pollution. Moreover, disposal of solid wastes such as garbage from kitchen, plastic bags and etc. is also a noticeable source in the Lake. Sediments entering the lake by flowing along the streams and gullies from surrounding mountainous area are also main factors affecting the reduction of water level in Inle Lake. This is because the farmers carry out shifting cultivation along the hills surrounding the lake which makes the soil prone to run off. Therefore, it urgently needs to manage the water pollution sources in order to conserve the Inle Lake. |
