Abstract Evaluative language refers to words or phrases that express the attitude of the writer or speaker (Hunston, 2011). In the past, studies of evaluative language focused extensively on written advertisements and commercials (Kheovichai, 2014; Pounds, 2011, Shaw, 2006). However, evaluative language is also commonly found in other types of written discourse such as online film reviews (Jong & Burgers, 2013). Therefore, this present study provided an analysis of evaluative language found in written English language online film reviews and compared results between consumer and professional critics. The data for the analysis has been collected from 32 online film reviews consisting of 16 consumer reviews, and 16 professional reviews. In total, 15,829 words and tokens have been analyzed using attitude analysis by Martin and White (2005) along with six aspects of film review by Na et al. (2009). As a result, there were 324 instances of evaluative language being used, 148 instances were featured in reviews of consumer critics and 176 instances were featured in reviews of professional critics. In summary, the findings and discussion of this present study revealed that both groups of critics focused on appraising film elements. However, professional critics tend to be more reserved and specific while consumers were more straightforward and unspecific. The findings also revealed a potentially interesting relationship between the critic and the aspects of the film they chose to evaluate
