Title of Article Nutritional status, Mental health and Demographic Factors Associated with Hypertension Among Middle Aged Population in Thailand

     Abstract Background: Hypertension is one of major public health problems with an increasing trend in Thailand. This research aimed to determine the influence of obesity, depression and demographic factors on hypertension among middle aged population in Thailand. Method: This cross-sectional study used the big data platform of the Heath Data Center (HDC) of Department of Public Health. This nationwide survey collected data among 2,197,062 participants using the 43-standard healthcare folder’s forms. The generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was used to identify the association of obesity, depression, demographic factors and hypertension when controlling the effects of co-variates presenting adjusted OR and 95% confidence interval. Result: Among 2,197,062 respondents, 5.53 % (95%CI: 5.50-5.56) had hypertension. Factors that were associated with hypertension were; obesity with BMI ≥ 30 (adj. OR = 5.11; 95%CI: 4.96– 5.27), mild-severe depression (adj.OR=2.52; 95%CI: 2.26 – 2.82), aged between 55-59 years old (adj.OR= 2.45; 95%CI: 2.42 - 2.49), were widowed/divorce/separate (adj.OR= 1.41; 95%CI: 1.29 – 1.54), female (adj. OR= 1.53; 95%CI: 1.51 – 1.54), smoking (adj.OR= 1.33; 95%CI: 1.31-1.36), and had hypertension relative (adj. OR= 1.14 ; 95%CI: 1.12 - 1.16). Conclusion: One in twenty of the middle age respondents had hypertension. obesity, depression, age, marital status, family history and smoking were associated with hypertension.
