The Costumes in the Royal palace of Luang Prabang: Relationship’s sign between Lan Xang and Siam kingdoms
Abstract
The Royal costume in Luang Prabang is a signal of relationship between Lan Xang and Siamese during 1816 -1905. This study employed a qualitative research which aimed to investigate the sign representing the relationship between Lan Xang and Siam through the costumes in the Royal palace of Luang Prabang.
The researcher selected the costumes from the king in 1816 to 1905, which consisted of King Manthaturat , King Chandra, King Mahintarathep (King Un Kham ) and King Sakrintharit. The researcher conducted a survey and collected data from interviews with the key informants, casual informants and general informants. The data were analysis with descriptive based on to find a sign on the royal costume in Luang Prabang kings which shows the relationship between Lan Xang and Siam. The study results reveal the sign represents relationship embedded in the royal hat (Pra Mala), Pusaporn(Costumes), and insignias which Influenced by Siam as in that periods were colonized by the king of Siam. The most outstanding constime were found in King Mahintorn Nipathorn: in same period with King Rama Vof Siam, the costumes were related to the government administrations such as the royal hat, the costumes in various patters (Kab Riew, Kab Dok Buayai, Khemer, and Siam patterns). When the King from Siam provide to the King of Luang Prabang, this stuffs shows the dominant of Siam as sign of colonization. Furthermore, the study found that the materials had related to the relationship between Lao and Siam such as insignias (the royal hat) and the Khmer patterns based on historical relations which can be notice that the costume in Luang Prabang were influenced by Siam because the relationship in siblings. Resulted in some king in Siam promoted the Lan Xang king as the member of the royal dynasty.
