Abstract |
Objective: To evaluate the effect of prebiotics supplementation on microbiota diversity indices in chicken intestine.Materials and Methods: Relevant citations were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The titles and abstracts of the retrieved citations were preliminary screened for their eligibility. Then, full-text articles were assessed using in-depth screening from the methodology and the result sections of the articles for inclusion. Data of the included studies were extracted for further analysis. Risk of bias of the included studies was also assessed using SYRCLE’s risk of bias tool. A meta-analysis was performed with a random effects model. The study outcomes were standardized mean difference (SMD) of Shannon index, Simpson index and Chao1. The pooled estimates of the effect size of prebiotic supplementation on microbiota diversity of chicken intestine were determined. In addition, sensitivity analysis, and assessment for publication bias were conducted. Results: Prebiotic supplementation significantly increased the Shannon index (SMD=1.01, [95% CI, 0.33 to 1.68], P=0.003), but not significantly altered Simpson index (SMD=0.78, [95% CI, -0.24 to 1.79], P=0.133) and Chao1 (SMD=-0.07, [95% CI, -0.35 to 0.21], P=0.633), with high heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the Simpson index was not robust for all three assessed characteristics, whereas publication bias assessment showed some bias in Chao1 outcome.Conclusion: Prebiotic supplementation tends to increase Shannon index in chicken intestine; however, more relevant trials are required to confirm the results. |
