Abstract Hollow mesoporous silica spheres (HMSSs) with high specific surface area and uniform particle size were fabricated via ultrasonic-assisted using soft template in alkaline condition which processing through cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a micelles formation and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as silica source. The morphology and structure were characterized by SEM, TEM, SAXS, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. Results from SEM and TEM showed hollow mesoporous structures, spherical shape, uniform particle size, and thin shell thickness. SAXS patterns confirmed the hexagonal mesoporous structure in the shell. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm showed high specific surface area, large pore volume, and narrow pore size distribution. The shell thickness, pore size, and diameter could be controlled by adjusting the hexane concentration, surfactant species, and pH, respectively. Moreover, ethanol/water ratio and lithocholic acid (LCA), as co-surfactant, affected the morphology of silica material. Hence, the synthesized HMSSs are suitable for various applications, including catalysis, absorption, sensor, and drug delivery.
