     Abstract Chronic ethanol consumption has been recognized to be one of the factors that cause male reproductive dysfunction. Previous studies have focused to study on the effects of ethanol on the testicular function and sperm quality. However, little is known about its adverse effects on the epididymis and seminal vesicle. Aim of this study was to investigate the alterations in such organs induced by ethanol. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into control and ethanol-treated groups (9 animals in each group). Animals in the control group were received with distilled water, while in the experimental group, rats were administered with 40% ethanol for 56 consecutive days. Tissues of the epididymis and seminal vesicle were collected to observe the epithelial height and muscular thickness. Biochemical components in the epididymal and seminal vesicle fluids were also analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results showed that ethanol significantly reduced epithelial height accompanied with increased thickness of its muscular layer in both the epididymis and seminal vesicle. Levels of the epididymal carnitine and the seminal vesicle myo-inositol were also significantly decreased in ethanol-treated rats. It is concluded that ethanol administration caused the significant changes of morphometric parameters and metabolite concentrations in the epididymis and seminal vesicle.
