Abstract |
Effects of Circuit Training With and Without Inspiratory Muscle Training on Exercise Capacity and Flexibility in the Elderly. JEPonline 26(4):60-70. This study investigated the effects of circuit training with and without inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on exercise capacity, flexibility, and body composition in the elderly. Fifty-four elderly participants were randomized into 2 Groups: circuit training with IMT (CIG) or circuit training without IMT (CG). In the CIG, participants circuit trained with IMT for 40 min·d-1, 3 d·wk-1 for 12 weeks. Subjects in the CG performed circuit training alone for 40 min·d-1, 3 d·wk-1 for 12 weeks. Exercise capacity, flexibility, and body composition were evaluated before and after exercise training. Circuit training with and without IMT significantly increased the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) after the study period (P < 0.01). Improvement of flexibility after the exercise program was also found in both groups (P < 0.01). Moreover, percent body fat was significantly lower in the CIG (P < 0.05). This study demonstrated that the circuit training is effective in improving exercise capacity and flexibility whether IMT is added in the exercise program or not. Moreover, addition of IMT to
circuit training can improve body fat in older adults. |
