Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) was reported to be a stronger contributor for walking difficulty in
female elderly. Walking difficulty can affect functional independence, risk of adverse health
outcome, and increase risk of mortality. Thus, emphasizing on a simple functional measure
as a screening tool for walking difficulty in patients with KOA might provide better
interpretation in clinical judgement. This study aimed to explore the ability of one leg
stance test (OLST) to discriminate walking difficulty in female with KOA. A total of 62
females aged between 60 and 79 years with KOA were recruited. Then, they were divided
into two groups based on their ability to perform OLST, including OLST ≤ 10 seconds
(n=34) and OLST > 10 seconds (n=28) groups. The eligible participants were assessed
their walking ability in term of walking speed and walking endurance using 10-meter walk
test (10MWT) and 2-minute walk test (2MWT), respectively. The results showed that
female elderly with KOA who performed OLST for ≤ 10 seconds were reported significantly shorter distance using 2MWT than those who performed OLST for > 10 seconds (107.33 ±
13.80 vs 116.04 ± 14.23 m, p-value < 0.05). Those who performed OLST for ≤ 10 seconds
presented slower walking speed using 10MWT compared to those who can maintain OLST
> 10 seconds; however, no statistically significant difference was reported (0.96 ± 0.14 vs
1.01 ± 0.18 m/s, p-value = 0.271). This study has demonstrated that applying a simple
quick test, such as OLST as screening tool, was beneficial to screen both postural balance
problem and walking difficulty when managing KOA condition in clinical setting. The study
suggested that the importance of further assessment for walking difficulty when poor
balance was presented among people with KOA condition to prevent adverse effects in
these individuals. |
