Abstract Augmented reality technology, that integrates multiple multimedia features into a singular device, is gaining widespread application due to its numerous benefits. This research delved into the impacts of open-ended inquiry learning coupled with augmented reality on the conceptual comprehension and science motivation, particularly focusing on the scientific concept of flowering plant reproduction among seventh-grade students. Conducted in Northeastern Thailand, the study involved 32 students from this grade, divided into two distinct groups. The experimental group engaged in an innovative learning approach that combined open-ended inquiry learning with augmented reality, while the control group adhered to the traditional inquiry-based learning method. The assessment of students' scientific conceptual understanding was carried out through a pre-test and post-test, consisting of three open-ended questions about the reproduction of flowering plants. Additionally, following the intervention, both groups' motivation towards science learning was evaluated using a 25-item science motivation questionnaire. The findings revealed a significant disparity between the two groups in their understanding of fruit and seed development and seed germination. Moreover, the integration of open inquiry and augmented reality was observed to have a positive effect on the students' motivation towards learning science, particularly in terms of grade motivation.
