     Abstract Developing the community and economy in Khon Kaen province also involves engineering work such as buildings, residents, roads, and tunnels. Some sites need to be landfilled and use retaining walls to prevent landslides in the landfill. Moreover, most landfill is the local soil for economic reasons. However, in some sites, the local Khon Kaen soil is loess or a windblown deposit with a honeycomb structure. The shear strength of Khon Kaen loess is high under dry conditions but dramatically drops under wet conditions. That has shown Khon Kaen loess as collapsible soil with a severe degree. Therefore, using Khon Kaen loess as the backfill behind the retaining wall must be investigated. This research conducted the field test in backfill with a 90 percent of the maximum dry density by the standard proctor compaction test. The result showed that the maximum stresses occurred near the backfill surface. The maximum horizontal stress is higher than the maximum vertical stresses in dry and wet conditions. Besides, the subsidence increased with moisture content increased by soaking. After soaking for 1 hour, the settlement increased to 11.50 mm.
