Abstract |
Forensic evidence is essential in the judicial process since it connects suspects to criminal activities. Numerous forms of physical evidence may be present at crime scenes, although fingerprints are among the most efficacious for individual identification. Recently, cybercrime has escalated due to technology improvements, particularly mobile phones, which are ubiquitous in daily life and frequently serve as the primary devices containing fingerprints. This study examines the quality of fingerprints on various types of phone screen protectors, utilizing a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to analyze the surface of the protectors. The study examines the temporal quality of fingerprints post-deposition, employing magnetic powder and cyanoacrylate fuming methods, then stained with Basic Yellow 40 (BY40). The findings indicated that fingerprints formed with the magnetic powder method, after 1 and 3 days, earned scores ranging from 3 to 4, signifying distinct fingerprints suitable for identification purposes. Nevertheless, after three days, the clarity of the ridge detail started to decline. Furthermore, fingerprints processed by the cyanoacrylate fuming method, then stained with Basic Yellow 40 (BY40), exhibited scores ranging from 3 to 4 after 1 day, 3 days, and 1 week, while maintaining sufficient clarity for identification purposes. After one week, the fingerprint ridges on clear glass film, matte glass film, and paper-like film started to diminish. This research aims to serve as a guideline for the collection and enhancement of latent fingerprints on screen protectors utilized as evidence in forensic investigations. |
