Abstract “Khing Haeng” is one of the herbs commonly used in Thai traditional medical formulas. This crude drug, with 4 other herbs--Deeplee (dried matured infructescence of Piper retrofractum Vahl), Chaplu (dried roots of Piper sarmentosum Roxb.), Sakhan (dried stems of Piper aff. pendulispicum C.DC.), Chetamoon Pleng (dried roots of Plambago indica L.)--in equal amount (by weight), are known as a set of drug called “Benchakoon”. It is frequently prescribed by Thai traditional healers, either as a set or in combination with other material medica, for a wide range of medical indications. The main objective of this research is to identify taxonomically the plant source(s) of the crude drug “Khing Haeng”. Three steps of research methods were applied. First, description of the plant source for this crude drug will be extracted out from all available Thai ancient traditional medical literatures. Secondly, the plant source will be traced from the major herbal drug stores to their suppliers and to local herbal collectors. The plants were then collected and the herbarium and spirit specimens were prepared. And, finally the plant specimens collected were identified, identification were confirmed by revising taxonomically the whole plant group (at the generic level). Resulting from our intensive field work in the past 3 years we have collected and identified 2 taxa of the family Zingiberaceae as the plant sources for “Khing Haeng”, Zingiber ligulatum Roxb. and Hedychium gomezianum Wall. Details of which will be presented. However, the crude drug from the prior taxon are known and used among the healers in central, western and northern Thailand, while those from the latter species are commonly known in peninsular and eastern Thailand. This latter taxon is one of the 21 species presently known to be native to Thailand. Key words: Khing Haeng, Botanical origin, Zingiberaceae, Zingiber ligulatum Roxb., Hedychium gomezianum Wall.
