Abstract A 95 kHz AC field system has been developed to provide a heating effect in magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermia application. The induction heating system consists of a DC power supply, IGBTs (Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors), and resonant tank comprising a 4 layer 80 turn coil in series with a 47.56 nF capacitor. The system can provide a field of 6.4mT in amplitude at 8A peak current. The 10 × 75 mm sample tube is shielded from direct heat from the coil by means of a flowing water layer. Some tests on 1ml of 10 mg/ml dextran-coated MgFe2O4 in deionized (DI) water gave an increase of 2.25 °C from 25 °C in 15 minutes, while 1ml of 50mg/ml non-coated Fe3O4 in DI water gave only 3.5 °C from 26 °C in 22 minutes. The small increase in temperature is partly due to the precipitation of the nano-particles, and the heat loss due to the flowing water shield.
