Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by multiple risk factors. We aimed to evaluate the endothelial function by measuring the forearm blood flow (FBF) in 75 MetS patients and 46 control subjects. FBF was measured with venous occlusion plethysmography. There was a decrease in maximum hyperemic flow during reactive hyperemia in MetS patients when compared with healthy controls. Moreover, body mass index and waist circumference were significantly correlated with the maximum hyperemic flow, r = -0.255, P = 0.007 and r = -0.338, P <0.001, respectively. Our findings suggest that FBF may be used as an early indicator for endothelial dysfunction in patients with metabolic syndrome and other related risk factors. |
