ABSTRACT
The present study is on the study of using inference strategies to improve Thai tertiary students’ learning vocabulary. This study aimed to examine (1) the effects of inference strategies on a Thai tertiary students’ learning vocabulary,
(2) how students used inference strategies to learn vocabulary, and (3) students’ perceptions on learning new vocabulary via the use of inference strategies. The subjects were 38 first year Public Administration major students who enrolled in the course English for Communication (01550101), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University. Quantitative data were generated through pre-test and post test, while the qualitative data were generated though the in-depth interview.
The results demonstrated a positive effect of student’s learning vocabulary through inference strategies. This paper highlights interesting findings on student’s usage of inference strategies to learn new vocabulary by revealing the patterns of their strategy use. The paper also highlights that students differed in their ability to use inference strategies, which led to varying degrees of vocabulary acquisition.
