     Abstract Fat to Protein ratio (F:P) was considered as an appropriate indicator for energy balance and practical to be applied in genetic evaluation. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic variation across different stage. Data included 184,073 test-day F:P records from 21,332 Thai crossbreds Holsteins at first lactation between 1991 and 2011. All variance components were estimated using random regression test day models with legendre polynomials of 2 degrees; fixed effects included test-day, test-month, test- year, days in milk, age at first calving and breed groups. A least square mean of F:P ranged from 1.14 to 1.18. The F:P started to increase from 5 to 35 days after calving and stabilized between 35 and 95 days postpartum. After that, F:P had a slight decline in late lactation. Heritability of F:P through day in milk range from 0.15 to 0.19; the highest values found at the mid-lactation. Genetic correlation between F:P across days in milk was all positive; the highest correlation ranged from 0.95 to 1.00 at the first 95 days in milk. According to genetic variation of F:P this result indicated that selection for energy balance in Thai crossbred cows was possible through breeding program.
