| บทคัดย่อ |
Abstract: This qualitative research was aimed at analyzing the economic security processes of rural northeastern Thai women who were married to westerners. The research target group included 30 women who had been married to westerners for a period of one year and over. The women under this study live in a rural community in the Northeast of Thailand at present. The data was collected by means of an interview and non-participatory observation from September 2015 until August, 2016, after which content analysis was performed. The research results are presented by analytical description.
The findings reveal that the target women who were married to westerners rely on 4 steps of economic security building: 1) seeking a westerner through contact with relatives, friends, marriage brokers, or contact via the Internet, or working in a service sector; 2) pre-marriage living with a western partner by adjusting oneself and following the agreement made with the partner; 3) living with a western husband through negotiation for a wedding ceremony, demonstrating a wife role that is in accordance with the husband’s expectation, and management of conflicts; and 4) occupational building by investment in agriculture and non-agriculture. These processes result in multiple security outcomes for women who got married to western men, namely, earning of income for daily living, increase of assets, having savings, having an income-building occupation, and abilities of these women to raise the children born from previous marriage and take care of their father and mother by giving money, paying for education, paying for daily allowances, and paying debts. The roles of these women reflect social reproduction of a daughter’s role and gratitude values of Thai society the women still observe.
