Abstract Human development has its foundation in the Capability Approach which enables humans to create a set of valuable capabilities by themselves as an agent. Later on, more importance was placed on utilization of the social structure including institutional structure and group process as conditions for human development. Also, the Capability Approach necessitates multi-dimensional perspectives for accurate analyzes. This article aimed at extending the Capability Approach in the dimension of interaction with Structuration Approach. The vulnerable group that is becoming the next generation of elderly was selected and studied on the issue of valuable self-reliance. There are two major findings: (1) Valuable Self-reliance , in terms of a set of valuable capabilities, is the consequence of the interaction between individual capabilities as an agent and collective capabilities derived from the social structure which has been driven by the intermediation between individual values and collective values. (2) The reduction of social spaces between the social structure and the next generation of elderly increases the opportunities for their valuable self-reliance achievement. This article propose herein a capability enhancement model based on the node of interaction to reduce social spaces and increase a set of valuable capabilities.
