Abstract Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of different zirconia surface treatments and ceramic veneering procedures on shear bond strength of ceramic veneered zirconia. Methods: 180 of sintered zirconia specimens (Incoris ZI®) were prepared in disk shape (12*8*0.8 mm) and randomly divided into four study groups(n=45 per group): as-sintered (A), sandblasted (S), grinded (G) and Er-YAG laser lased (E). Each group was further ramdomly veneered with ceramic (Ø 8 mm, 1.5 mm thickness) using three different veneering technique: layering (L), hot-pressed (P) and CAD-on (C). The shear bond strength was determined on a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to determine for significant difference of shear bond strength (α=0.05). Surface morphology was evaluated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Shear bond strength were 26.008±2.620 for SC, 25.721±2.610 for GC, 25.530±2.465 for EC, 21.899±2.021 for GL, 20.763±2.636 for GP, 19.076±2.817 for AC, 19.005±2.456 for EL, 18.897±2.577 for SL, 18.590±2.398 for AL, 18.563±2.415 for EP, 18.434±1.933 for SP and 16.544±3.076 for AP. There were significant difference in bond strength upon ceramic veneering method and zirconia surface procedure as well as the effect of both factors interaction (P<0.05). Significant high bond strength was achieved through CAD-on technique compare to the others (P<0.05). No significant difference between layering and press-on technique in contribution effect to bond strength (P>0.05). Grinding to zirconia provide significant more effect to enhance bond strength than other methods (P<0.05). Comparable in enhancing bond strength was achieved though the sandblasting surface and laser lased surface (P>0.05). SEM indicated difference in surface topography upon different surface preparations with predictable even characteristic was observed though the laser lased method. Conclusion: Surface treatment of zirconia and ceramic veneering technique provided significant effect to the ceramic veneered zirconia bond strength. Reliable and predictable in shear bond strength of ceramic veneer zirconia were achieved though CAD-on method and laser lased zirconia surface provided better shear bond strength in comparable with sandblast technique.
