Abstract Abstract: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major health problem of women after delivery, especially among adolescent mothers. In some cultures, the baby’s gender is perceptively important, mainly among the Muslim society which is 90 percent of the population in Central Java, Indonesia. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association between gender and PPD among adolescent mothers in Central Java, Indonesia. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 520 adolescent mothers who were multistage randomly selected to response to a structured questionnaire interview. The Edinburg Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to assess the PPD at 1-6 weeks after delivering. Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the association between infant gender and PPD among adolescent mothers when controlling for covariates. Results: The total of 520 adolescent mothers was of an average age of 17.85±1.22 years old. The prevalence of PPD was 60.58% (95%CI: 56.29-64.70). Dissatisfaction with infant gender (Adj OR: 2.31 95%CI: 1.59-2.34), father’s expected gender of the baby (Adj OR: 1.92 95%CI: 1.29-2.83), and age of the mother (Adj OR: 1.81 95%CI: 1.23-2.64) were statically significant associated with PPD. Conclusion: Postpartum depression was a common problem among adolescent mothers in Central Java, Indonesia. Furthermore, it was indicated that the gender of the baby were potential risk factors for PPD among adolescent mothers.
