Abstract A 4-cylinder SI engine (1497 cc) was modified for fueling with CNG and H2. The engine performance was investigated and compared with when fueling with gasohol (E10), CNG, and blended fuels of CNG and H2. The blended fuel of 5% (HCNG5) and 10% (HCNG10) of H2 were examined and studied the possibility of using H2 in the SI engine. A test rig with a dynamo meter was set to study torque, brake power, brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency of the engine fueled with those fuels for various speeds (1500--4500 rpm). Degree ignition of the engine was not adjusted. The results showed that fueling with gasohol gave highest performance of Torque 85 Nm, brake power 22.24 kW, BSFC 0.228 kg/kWh and brake thermal efficiency 38.04% at 2500 rpm. With 10% of H2, brake power and Torque were reduced 42.35% and 42.35% respectively. However, HCNG10 gave higher brake thermal efficiency of 2.59% and 1.53% than CNG and HCNG5. On the other hand, BSFC of HCNG10 was 4.13% and 2.43% more than CNG and HCNG5. This suggested that it is possible to fuel 4-cylinder SI engine with 10% of H2.
