Abstract Abstract Background: With dramatic increase in the number of older individuals, special efforts have been made to promote the levels of independence and reduce fall rates among these individuals. Objectives: To investigate the effects of Thai dance exercises over 6 weeks on functional mobility and the number of faller individuals in community-dwelling older individuals. Methods: This quasi-experimental design was conducted in sixty-one community-dwelling older subjects completed a Thai dance program for 50 minutes/day, 3 days/week over 6 weeks. They were assessed for their functional mobility relating to levels of independence, and prospectively followed-up for fall data over 6 months. Results: Subjects improved their functional mobility significantly after 3-week training and improved even further at week 6 (p<0.01). The number of faller individuals obviously decreased from 35% (n = 21) prior to training to only 8% (n = 5) after the program follow-up 6 months (p<0.001). Conclusions: Thai dance is a form of musical dance exercise that involves whole body movements. The current findings further confirmed benefit of a Thai dance program as an alternative option to promote levels of independence and safety among community-dwelling older adults.
