Abstract Manganese contaminated in water supply can cause aesthetic and pipe rusting problems. The removal of manganese by bio-filtration process has been reported. This study aims to screen manganese-oxidizing bacteria for enhancing the removal performance of the bio-filter. Soil and sand filter from Khon Kaen, Thailand were selected as sources for manganese-oxidizing bacterial screening. Among twenty one pure enriched cultures, six isolates were positive in pre-screening manganese-oxidizing culture using leucoberbelin blue method. Three isolates designated SBP-1, SBP-3, and SBP-7 were selected for manganese oxidation experiment. The result indicated that all selected isolates well removed manganese (up to 50%). During the tests with manganese concentrations of 1-5 mg/L, SBP-1, SBP-3, and SBP-7 could remove manganese for 24-49, 28-50, and 10-20%, respectively. These screened bacteria were potential for augmenting to bio-filter in further application.
