Abstract The paper demonstrates using a Kriging surrogate model in combination with evolutionary algorithms for optimizing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wing. The design problem is set to minimize wing mass subject to aeroelastic and structural design constraints. Design variables determine thicknesses and positions of wing ribs, spars and skins. Numerical results show that the Kriging model can accurately predict aeroelastic characteristics but somewhat inefficient for prediction of stress and displace. Nevertheless, this study paves the way for further improvement of the preliminary design process of an aircraft wing.
