Abstract School requires improvement from time to time and this process of change needs to be led by a leader who is able to run the school very conducive to teaching and learning processes. In doing so, school leaders require the practice of instructional leadership to decipher the meanings and objectives of teachers-students interaction. However, fewer studies presented the challenges that school principals need to overcome while becoming an instructional leader. This research, therefore, aimed at exploring the current and desirable states of instructional leadership of elementary school principals in Indonesia. A survey questionnaire was employed to 238 school principals to measure the level of leading gaps as instructional leaders in Bogor city, Indonesia. Priority Needs Index (PNI) modified was calculated to analyze the data. The result of this research revealed that from five expected dimensions for the improvements, Conducting Supervision was ranked as the highest dimension to be developed with the value of PNImodified (1.03), followed by Supplying Professional Development, with the value of PNImodified (0.42), Promoting a Positive Learning Climate (PNImodified=0.37), Adopting Innovative Curriculum (PNImodified= 0.36), and Defining Missions (PNImodified=0.34). The implication of this result is that elementary school principals need to be aware of the gaps that potentially can influence their practices as instructional leaders. Correspondingly, school principals need to provide supervisory roles effectively to support teachers improving and facilitate space for students to learn.
