     Abstract Khon Kaen University cooperated with mathematics Certification Institute of Japan to use SUKEN to evaluate students’ mathematical competency. SUKEN certification is widely recognized in Japan for its high level of competency. This pilot study aimed to evaluate students’ mathematical competency. Target group was 81 students who study in first grade mathematics classroom from two schools in Thailand. These mathematics classroom used Open Approach as a teaching approach (Inprasitha, 2011). Data were collected by using SUKEN level 11 in the first semester, 2015 academic year. The result showed that 33% of the students could pass this level (passing score of 70%)
