Abstract Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate needs and attitudes of hospital pharmacists toward continuing pharmacist specialist education and relevant factors, including opportunities and obstacles to continuing specialist education. Methodology: This study applied cross-sectional descriptive research. The sample group was all-level hospital pharmacists under the Office of Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Public Health, selected through a stratified sampling selection method. The instrument was a self-administered questionnaire to examine needs and types of pharmacist specialist education, along with attitudes towards continuing specialist education in pharmacy. Results: The total number of the respondents was 451 pharmacists. Among all of the respondents, 80 of them (17.7%) had experience of obtaining non-postdoctoral training. A good share of participants, 365 (80.9%), were interested in continuing a 4-month short-term certification program, while 54 of them (12.0%) were interested in a general residency program. The appropriate durations of specialist education were ranged from four months to one year. Hospital directors and chiefs of the pharmacy department were believed to be involved in analysis and planning for dispatching hospital pharmacists to training or education. According to 339 of the respondents (88.5%), most hospitals did not establish indicators of achievement from continuing specialist education or training in pharmacy. Moreover, supportive factors influencing pharmacists’ decisions to continue specialist education or join training programs were needs for knowledge and specialty improvement, development of skills in caring for patients, and higher incomes and career advancement. On the contrary, obstacle factors influencing their decisions not to continue specialist education or attend training programs were a shortage of staff in pharmacy departments at hospitals where they worked and a lack of support funding for continuing education or joining training programs. As for attitudes, the participants had positive attitudes toward attending specialist education or training programs. Conclusion: The majority of hospital pharmacists agree that continuing in pharmacist specialist education is beneficial, and the provision of various aspects of supports would contribute to effective quality pharmaceutical services and professional advancement in society.
