Abstract An important new contribution would be a systematic analysis of textbook treatments of multiplication and division (Greer, 1992). Inprasitha (2011) mentioned that the textbooks should try to make the situation most relevant to the real world in students' daily lives, let students create meaning from the problem situation before they engage in the mathematical world. In this paper, we have studied the introduction of multiplication lessons on the textbooks in five countries: Thailand, Japan, Singapore and two countries from CLMV; Cambodia and Vietnam. The textbook study found that introductions of the multiplication lessons were different. Japanese textbooks displayed the students' real world from what they, offered real-world activities that students can learn by themselves. Including the presentation of the concept of multiplication was different in each country. The concept of multiplication was a number of members in each group and a multiplier as a number of groups consisting of Cambodia Vietnam and Japan. In Thailand, the concept of multiplication defined as a number of groups and a multiplier as a number of members in each group. Moreover, Singapore introduced the concept of multiplication in both concepts.
