Alternative materials derived from mushroom mycelium have gained increasing attention to replace others like leather, wood pulps, and plastic because mushrooms, as environmental
friendly and biodegradable matter, can grow rapidly and can be cultured in a controlled environment. This study aimed to develop mycelium sheets from a commercially available
mushroom, Pleurotus sp., or oyster mushroom, a well-known food source of protein and minerals. The oyster mushrooms were purchased from a local market in Muang district, Khon
Kaen province, and were isolated and cultured in malt extract broth (MEB) for 30 days to form a mycelium sheet on top of the growth medium. After that, the obtained oyster mycelium sheet (OMS) was dried before testing material properties. According to the scanning electron microscope images, the sheet surface was covered with a biofilm. In the water absorption test, the weight increased by 58.33±6.94% after being exposed to 80-85% humidity for 48 hours. The water contact angle with distilled water was 131.4±26.9 degrees, and the OMS had a tensile strength of 1.57±1.03 Mpa. The hardness value was 17.1±5.5 HV. The peaks in the infrared spectrum of OMS showed the presence of vibrational bonds from proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids. The biodegradability test revealed that the sheet weight decreased by 93%, 93%, and 97% when being buried in soil, soaked in water, and placed on top of the soil surface for 7 days, respectively. The findings of this study showed the OMS was environmentally friendly for the future alternative material. |
