Abstract Dissertation introduction has received continuous attention from researchers, it is considered the most challenging and difficult part of an academic text for graduate students, particularly for Non-Native English Speakers (NNES). However, there is a dearth of research on Dissertation Introductions (DIs) which investigate Native English Speakers (NES) and NNES especially Indonesian Ph.D. students in different disciplines such as engineering and education. This paper presents a move analysis of the introduction chapters of 100 dissertations written by Native English Speakers (NES) and Indonesian Ph.D. students in terms of move organization based on Bunton’s CARS (2002). The corpus was 100 DIs of Engineering and Education disciplines that were published online in ProQuest Dissertation and Theses Database. The findings revealed that both NES and Indonesian Ph.D. students followed the moves and steps found in the framework to create their Introduction chapters. It was found that only 28 dissertation introductions (28%) followed the Bunton’s CARS in this research, but they were not constructed in the way assumed in CARS because a number of move reversal and move recursive were found. In the Introduction chapters examined, it was found that there were both similarities and differences between NNES and NES writers in terms of the frequency of move-step occurrences, the move-step classification, patterns, and new steps.
