     Abstract Abstract Gendeng Village in Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia is one of the villages that inherited the authentic tradition of wayang craftsmanship in Java, even Indonesia. The development of the wayang making tradition in this village also has a long history. More than four generations of wayang craftsmen in this village have made a living through this tradition. But lately the existence of the wayang craftsmen in this village is threatened with regeneration problems. This research aims to: 1) to trace the history of the development of wayang craftsmanship in Gendeng Village chronologically. 2) to identify problems that hinder the regeneration of wayang craftsmen in Gendeng Village. The data analyzed in this research were collected from: first, The secondary data were collected from news, books, documents, and existing academic research articles, while primary data were derived from observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions The results of this research explained: 1) the historical chronology of the development of wayang craftsmanship in Gendeng Village, as well as 2) the regeneration problem that occurred among wayang craftsmen in Gendeng Village which stemmed from: first, the notion that being a craftsman is no longer a profitable occupation, second, the narrative about branding of Gendeng Village and user specifications which actually limit the creativity and flexibility of wayang craftsmen in this village.
