Abstract The overarching aim of the study was to explore the development of students’ listening comprehension performance and their metacognitive listening awareness using videos with subtitles within a metacognitive approach. The study focused on a group of 11 students (comprising five males and six females) in the 8th grade at Banrongjik School in Loei Province, chosen through purposive sampling. The research design followed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach. Furthermore, the research utilized four lesson plans, pre- and post- listening tests, metacognitive listening awareness using the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ), and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed notable improvements in participants’ listening comprehension performance, evidenced by a significant difference between their pre- (11.00) and post- (17.36) listening test scores. In addition, the students’ metacognitive listening awareness, particularly in the aspect of "mental translation" saw considerable enhancement after implementing the intervention. The correlation between students’ listening comprehension performance and their metacognitive listening awareness indicated a significant relationship, where improved comprehension performance contributed to heightened students’ metacognitive listening awareness. It is concluded that the use of videos with subtitles within a metacognitive approach proved effective in elevating students’ listening comprehension performance and fostering their metacognitive awareness in listening. Additionally, this study underscores the benefits of the metacognitive approach as a valuable method for improving listening comprehension and enhancing metacognitive listening awareness among students.
