Abstract |
To enhance ethanol fermentation efficiency from sweet sorghum stem juice (SSJ) by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NP01 under very high gravity (VHG) fermentation, three main parameters i.e. initial sugar, urea and cell concentrations were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design. The fermentation was carried out at 30oC. Results showed that the optimal initial sugar, urea and cell concentrations for high ethanol production were 267 g/L, 3.24 g/L and 1.32×108 cells/mL, respectively. Under these conditions, the highest ethanol concentration (PE) ethanol productivity (QP) and sugar consumption (%SC) were obtained at 121.18 g/L, 2.52 g/L·h and 91.74%, respectively. When the fermentation was controlled at 25oC under these conditions, the PE and QP values decreased to 115.95 g/L and 1.93 g/L·h, respectively. More severe effects on ethanol production were observed at higher temperature of 35oC (PE, 100.49 g/L and QP, 2.09 g/L·h). |
