Abstract Using augmented reality (AR) for science learning, students describe and understand scientific phenomena and foster scientific thinking. By combining gaming with AR, learning outcomes can be enhanced by stimulating motivation. In the science learning of plant development, AR was used to expedite plant growth observation in this study. Second-grade students’ engagement was measured in a mobile AR game named Little Farmer, which focused on plant development. We developed the mini-game AR application and conducted a preliminary study on student engagement study. Thirty second-grade students who had not previously used AR for science learning were recruited as the participants. A survey was conducted using a 12-item questionnaire designed to measure students’ engagement across four dimensions: attention, perceived usability, attraction, and satisfaction. The findings indicated that the students responded positively in all dimensions.
