Abstract |
Ma Noy, Cissampelos pareira Linn. (family Menispermaceae) is a woody climbing vine and widespread in northeast Thailand. Their leaves formed gel within 2-3 minutes after water extraction and were consumed as dessert or food with spicy by northeastern Thais. This plant was also claimed as a birth control agent by rural Indian women. An aim of this study was to evaluate the hepatotoxic and antifertility effect in male mice after oral administration with leaf gel of C. pareira at doses of 10, 20 and 30 mg/ 100 gBW daily for 21 days. Blood alanine aminotransferase (ALT), a biomarker of liver injury in all treated groups showed non-significant difference from the control group (p > 0.05). The significant increment of plasma prolactin was found in the high dose treated group only but testosterone levels of all treated groups were significantly decreased from the control. Whereas, sperm quality impairment was shown in all treated groups, including a decrease of total sperm count and percentage of viable sperms and an increase in percentage of abnormal sperms. From the present study, it is concluded that leaf gel of C. pareira did not injure hepatocytes but it decreased sperm quality. |
