Abstract The three-dimensional framework {[Zn3(tp)4](DMFH)2(DMF)1.4}n (1∙2DMFH∙1.4DMF) has been synthesized from Zn(NO3)2•6H2O and terephthalic acid (H2tp). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 is a coordination network exhibiting voids that contain DMF and protonated DMFH guest molecules. The building block of 1 is a trinuclear cluster unit in which two tetrahedral Zinc atoms (Zn1) sandwich an octahedral metal centre (Zn2). Each cluster unit is bridged by six terephthalate ligands displaying two different coordination modes, to form a 3D framework. The rigid structure could retain its 3D framework upon guest exchange. By soaking the host crystals in dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), N,N-dimethylacrylamide (C2H3CON(CH3)2) and N,N-dimethylacetoacetamide (CH3COCH2CON(CH3)2) guest solutions, single crystals of 1∙2DMFH∙1.4DMF were transformed into single crystals of 1∙2DMFH∙ guest, without apparent host-structural changes. The guest-inclusion crystals have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations and providing detailed information of the guest molecules confined in the voids and of host-guest and/or guest-guest hydrogen-bonding interactions.
