Abstract In this paper, the ontology that represents knowledge of culture and belief region is presented. The ontology was carefully designed to specify concepts relevant to intangible and tangible cultural heritages and relations among them. Domain in this work focuses on cultural items and implicit attributes of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) as an initial study case. To further illustrate ontological potential, semantic search application is implemented along and exploited the ontology as a knowledge base. The ontology and application were evaluated by experts and gave satisfactory results. From evaluation point of view, many complex queries were designed as expect to fully utilize the relations among ontology classes, and results were returned correctly. Thus, it is proved that the ontology was well-defined in terms of a hierarchical structure and relations related from intermediate concept layers.
