Abstract
This article is a part of an on-going thesis entitled “The Practices of Everyday Life of Cart Carriers at the Rong Kluea Market, Thai-Cambodia Border.” The market located in Aranyaprathet district, Srakraw province. This paper seeks to understand conditions influencing the cart carriers to cross the border and engage in their work. An analysis is guided by the concepts of border studies. Qualitative research methods were used in the study. The research reveals that the government policies regarding Thai-Cambodia relationships and border areas have affected economic activities and relationships among people in the border market. Appointed, the border area at Rong Kluea Market, temporally border-crossing spot and a permanent border-crossing point and an international immigration checkpoint has both facilitated and limited trading activities and border-crossing of cart carries from Cambodia to engage in employment in the market. Currently, border-crossing has become more freely, at the same time power of the state in inspecting, supervising and control the border area also become more rigorous. However, push factors at home and pull factors at the host country, in terms of economic, political and socio-cultural conditions, make the Rong Kluea market became an “area of opportunity” for cart carriers from Cambodia.
