Abstract |
Background: The most important basic need for creation the human bone prostheses was the basic anthropologic bone data. The local Thai fibular data also needs for developing fibular nail for treatment of compound distal fibular fractures in the Northeast Thailand. The morphometric data of external and internal of Thai fibulae should be performed for the fibular nail prototype. Objectives: To predicate the relationships between fibula bone lengths and stature for local population. Also to study the external dimension and internal morphology of the marrow cavity anatomy of the Thai fibula. Materials and Methods: The study utilized 253 fibulae from 127 males and 192 fibulae from 96 females adult bones with known pre-mortem stature from the KKU Osteological Collection Unit of Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. All fibular bones were performed in two phases. Phase I: All fibulae external data were manually collected for total length, maximum diameter of P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5 (mid-shaft) position by using osteometric board and digital vernier caliper. Phase II: All 445 fibulae were selected for CT scan from Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. The CT images were reconstructed to 3D-fibula and marrow cavity. All 3D-fibulae were precisely mapped at 3 bony landmarks and 4 bony points. Later, they were measured same as phase I and additional internal data for fibular marrow cavity. All data were conducted for statistical analysis by using SPSS. Result: The average age group of male was 63 years and 59 years in female. The average total length of fibula (33.7 cm.) and stature (164.8 cm) of male was significantly higher than female. The correlation between total length of fibula and stature in the female group showed better correlation than male. Also the prediction value in female estimation equation showed more precisely than male. The early finding of position of constriction site of marrow cavity is in S3 bone segment. Conclusion: This study confirmed the own stature estimation to be specific for local population. More additional studies will be necessary to locate for the constriction site of marrow cavity of Thai fibula.
