Community-Based Tourism (CBT) is increasingly being recognised for its socio-economic contribution on host communities and a means by which sustainable tourism can be achieved. Current practices of tourism operation in Thailand highlight the growing trend towards community-based experiences which are manifested in varying degrees and forms in different tourist destinations. This paper examines the extent to which CBT has been practiced in two villages in Northeastern Thailand with a focus on understanding the local context and how it has characterised tourism processes over time. Two CBT villages selected for this study are Ban Prasat; a long-settled village in Nakhon Ratchasima, and the ethnic Phu Tai village of Ban Khok Kong in Kalasin. Data collection involved multiple field visits prior to the actual fieldwork where in-depth interviews were conducted locally with 40 key informants selected from 5 pre-defined stakeholder groups. Key themes outlined and discussed in this paper include CBT development paths, stakeholder groups, tourism processes, practical characterisation of CBT, and pressing issues and the way forward. The paper concludes that, while CBT “endogenous” approach through a sense of ownership, self-regulation and co-community management creates a positive impact on community livelihoods, its viability is more prominent on the social front and conversely depended upon the overall socio-economic conditions within the community.
