Abstract
This article aims to explain the conditions behind the sets of memories about the World War II presented through the war cemetery and the War museum in Kanchanaburi province. The analysis reveals the manifestation of the war winners – allies’ soldiers – as “victims”. The suffering of allies’ prisoners who were forced to build the railway to Myanmar, the strict control and viciousness of Japanese militaries, and the maliciousness of the War are the major themes of stories presented in the museum and cemetery. Such themes were (re)produced and become the dominant collective memories about the World War II. The formation of such memories is not detached from their context. Rather, they related to the dimension of time, history, and power – both power for the construction of memory and power to control and rule or lost control the colonial countries by the Western empire. These are conditions behind a set of memory that the war winners have selected and determined what should be remembered. In this sense, memory is politics.
Key Words: World War II, the politics of memory, the War Museum, Allied war cemetery.
