Abstract Rice quality assessment can be performed by its color and size which the production ability depends on the operator in milling processes. Rice polishing is one of the processes that significantly affect the rice grain quality. The lack of real-time monitoring causes the difficult to meet the required quality. In the paper, we propose a wireless color sensor node for rice whiteness measurements in real time. The color sensor nodes allow operators continuously monitoring and maintaining the rice grain color as needed. Results from the experiments show that the sensor nodes give significantly comparable output to the standard whiteness equipment. In addition, our sensor nodes operate on IPv6 Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN), which is ready for transferring measured data to support the future of the Internet of Things (IoT).
