Abstract |
This paper presents a study of biogas production from broiler chicken manure using a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) system. The CSTR system consists of a feedstock mixer tank, separator, fermentation reactor of the size of 60 m , sludge tank, balloon gas holder of the size of 15 m and a flare system. The broiler chicken manure mixed with rice husk was used as a raw material and was mixed with water at the ratio of 1:4 by volume. Waste water was fed into the fermentation tank and the biogas production rate, the composition of the biogas and the energy consumption for biogas production were studied. From the study, it was found that the biogas production rate was at an average of 11.19 m /day or 0.5738 m / kg-VS. This rate was quite close to the biogas production rate of the chicken slurry and food waste. The amount of biogas produced in the day time was more than that at night time due to the difference of the fermentation temperatures. The biogas compositions were 56.2% of methane (CH ), 36.2% of carbon dioxide (CO ), 0.4 % of oxygen (O ) and 7.2% of other gases. The energy consumption for biogas production was 74.83 kWh/day which was 5 times higher than the energy obtained from the produced biogas. |
