Abstract Food is one among social determinants of health. Due to an increase of aging population in society and changes of food security, older people and families have to organize foods to fulfill their needs and health problems. Health personnel have to understand how these people manage in order to promote health and encourage community to participate in managing the availability of a nutritious diet for older persons. This article is a part of dissertation on nutrition and elderly, reports on an ethnography research aimed understanding behavioral or action of elderly and families managing foods for themselves under the social, economic, environmental and cultural contexts. Collected data from 41 key informants who were older people and families with experienced in their food management. The results reveal four approaches for household food management (HFM): (1) they cook, choose preferred menus, prepare ingredients, plant vegetables, raise animal, preserve foods by themselves or organized by their couple who is also elder. (2) their children cook/buy foods for them (3) relatives or neighbors cook/buy foods for free or older people ask to buy for them, and (4) community volunteers, caregiver, or community leaders cook/buy foods for them. The results indicate that HFM influences strategies in achieving certain SDGs, including food security, improving nutrition and sustainable agriculture, healthy lives. Health personnel need to ensure healthy consumption, support families to improve nutrition and sustainable agriculture, and collaborate with related sectors to strengthen community involving in HFM to promote health and well being of senior population.
