Abstract Abstract Cooperative organizations all over the world are instruments of social and economic transformation. People form cooperatives for the fact that working together can help them attain a mutual development. In Eritrea the Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) initiated the formation of fisheries cooperatives in 1994, currently there are 39 village level cooperatives and 6 regional fishery cooperatives in Eritrea. More than 1500 fishermen and women are incorporated. Dahlak Sub-zone Fisheries cooperative is one of the reginal cooperatives involving 228 active members engaged in fish supply services. This study was aimed to assess the members’ attitudes toward the performance of their cooperative. A mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative) was used in this study; data were collected by questionnaires, from a population frame of 228 active members; using Taro Yamane’s statistical formula a sample of 140 fisheries cooperative members were selected by way of systematic random sampling techniques. Focus group discussion and semi-structured interviews with key informants were also incorporated. The data were analyzed using SPSS for quantitative and using SWOT analysis for the qualitative and Parsimonious model of Sequential Mixed Methods Designs final mixed analysis was conducted. The results showed that the attitudes of members towards social factors and environmental conservation were positive, the members had satisfactory participation, trust, commitment and sharing traditions with in their cooperative. With regard to environmental concern, the attitudes of the members was much greater satisfactory in avoiding overfishing and endangered species as well as protection of coral reefs. Whereas, the economic performance, which was considered to be the key role of cooperative, had unsatisfactory performance according to the members. The main factors were due to commanded market system and lack easy attainable loans and credits. It is recommended that the Ministry of Marine Resource Eritrea should reform policies of open and competitive market and encourage formation of internal revolving fund to secure the economic failure of Dahlak Fisheries cooperative.
